For longer trips outside the area the most recommended is Hwy 1 North through Morro bay, Pismo beach and the Big Sur to Monterey/Carmel. Further North to San Francisco and Napa county through the Redwood forest is also beautiful along the coast. There are countless great inland roads as well.
